Integrated transmission units

Transmission systems with overcapacity and low power consumption have been developed in electro and optical technology for DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing).

The project (funded by the Italian ministry of research, university and education, www.miur.it) aims to design, test and validate the prototypal version of the functional units (transmitter and receiver) of the new generation transmission systems for long distances (over 1000 Km), and very high transmission capacity (400Gb/s and 1Tb/s).
The project is the result of a collaboration between Ericsson Telecomunicazioni S.p.A. (Genoa) and DITEN (UNIGE).
The goal of COSMIC lab. was to provide an RTL description of the DSP for the 400Gbit and 1Tbit decoder in order to give area, power consumption and latency estimations. The analysis started from ADC sampling rate and data output parallelism in order to define the DSP clock frequency needed to receive such sample number and the DSP architecture parallelism needed to elaborate all data, providing correct output decision. The RTL code was developed and mapped on the Xilinx Virtex7 XC7V2000T FPGA.
